2022-05-09 07:10:21 The Painted Jezebel (Delias hyparete) is known for its distinctive coloration, with the white upper half contrasting with the bright yellow and red lower half of the hindwing! Doesn’t it look like it was painted on?

Spend a peaceful day in nature with your loved ones at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park! One of the largest urban parks in Singapore, it has sprawling open lawns along the river and is a biodiversity haven.

Here, you can find trees such as the towering Tembusu (Fagraea fragrans) and the beautiful Trumpet Tree (Tabebuia rosea). Spot animals such as the Peacock Pansy Butterfly (Junonia almana) at the Butterfly Habitat, and the Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) along the riverbanks.

Wondering what else there is to look out for at this park? Tap here to learn more about the history and facilities at the park!

Durian lovers – have you seen this red durian before?

With its scarlet red husk and glossy black seeds with a bright orange aril, it’s hard to believe this exotic-looking fruit is from a plant native to Singapore! The Squirrel Durian (Durio griffithii) is unfortunately inedible to humans and is naturally dispersed by small mammals and birds. The tree can grow up to 18m tall and bears pale yellow-white flowers that turn orange.

Interested to find out more about other types of durians? Stop by the The King of Fruits: Ethnobotany and Diversity of the Durians exhibition at the Singapore Botanic Gardens before it ends on 29 May!

2022-05-02 04:10:04 Those of you who guessed it was a male Fiddler Crab (Gelasimus sp.), you’re correct! Only males have an enlarged claw, whereas females have two equal-sized small ones.

The male Fiddler Crab favours different “hands” for different purposes. The larger claw is used for courtship and fighting, while the smaller claw has a spoon shaped tip that is used for feeding!
