Did you know that cats can be left-pawed or right-pawed? Each cat has an individual preference on which paw to extend when reaching for food or going down the stairs, amongst other activities!

Nonetheless, some can be ambidextrous, preferring their left or right paw for different tasks.

This World Turtle Day, get to know the Hawksbill Turtle! Critically endangered, the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is named for its protruding upper jaw that gives its mouth a beak-like appearance.

It has been spotted along our shores, where females have come to lay their eggs.

2022-05-22 04:45:02 International Day of Biological Diversity

To mark the International Day of Biological Diversity today, why not embark on an ‘I Spy’ challenge at your nearest park, to see how many different species you can spot?

At the launch of the Festival of Biodiversity yesterday, we shared our plans to conduct long-term monitoring of Singapore's forests in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, which is home to a variety of native wildlife, including the Gold-ringed Cat Snake (Boiga dendrophila). We will be re-surveying 62 forest plots to better understand their ecological processes and how they have changed over time, which will help guide our efforts in conservation!

Discover more about our island’s rich biodiversity by heading down to the Festival of Biodiversity today! Join us for many exciting online and onsite activities such as webinars, walking tours and exhibition booths.

Contrary to popular belief, not all bees live in large hives, with some living singly or in small groups!

Today, on World Bee Day, we celebrate earth’s vital pollinators, including the solitary Sunda Blue-banded Digger Bee (Amegilla andrewsi). It buzz pollinates flowers by clinging onto the anthers and vibrating its body at a frequency that allows the flower to release its pollen!

Solitary bees like the Sunda Blue-banded Digger Bee are peaceful and docile, and rarely sting even when disturbed. Nevertheless, keep your distance and do not disturb them.

Find out what to do when you encounter a bee here!

These brilliant blue flowers belong to the Delek Air (Memecylon ovatum), a native shrub or tree which grows in thickets along coastal cliffs and rocky seashores.

It is often mistaken for similar-looking coastal species like the Memecyclon edule and Memecylon oleifolium, which all have the ability to tolerate waterlogged and saline soils. Nevertheless, they can still be differentiated by comparing their flowers, fruits and foliage.
