ИГРА НЕ СТОИТ СВЕЧ

Literal definition: the game is not worth candles

Meaning: about a task or activity that does not justify the effort it takes. According to one of the theories, the idiom originates from French "Le jeu ne vaut pas is chandelle". It first appeared in times when there was no electricity and all card games held in the evenings required players to light up the table. If the stakes were low, the potential gain could not even compensate the cost of the candles burned during the session.

Usage example:
Не уверена, что игра стоит свеч и что мне действительно необходимо тратить свое время на эти исследования.
I'm not sure if the game is worth playing and that I really need to spend my time on this research.

Synonyms:

My car is on its last legs – I’ve had it twenty five years.
Моя машина на последнем издыхании – ей уже двадцать пять лет.

Фразы–синонимы:
из последних сил
на ладан дышит
еле-еле душа в теле
держится на честном слове
на соплях держится

НА ПОСЛЕДНЕМ ИЗДЫХАНИИ

Literal definition: on the last breath

Meaning: near to death or to the end of his or its useful life. In ancient times, the idiom had its direct meaning: to be in a very deplorable state. In everyday language, this expression was very common, but was used only in relation to people.
At present, this expression has retained its ancient meaning, and also acquired a new one – now this phrase is also applied to objects whose service life is coming to an end.

Usage example:
My car is on its last legs – I’ve had it twenty five years.
Моя машина на последнем издыхании – ей уже двадцать пять лет.

Synonyms
из последних сил
на ладан дышит
еле-еле душа в теле
держится на честном слове
на соплях держится

2021-06-12 14:10:50 JUNE 12. RUSSIA DAY.

Today is an important public holiday in Russia - the Day of Russia. This is one of the youngest holidays in Russia and has one of the most controversial stories of its foundation.

The fact is that 31 years ago, on this very day, the Congress of People's Deputies – the legislative body of the RSFSR – adopted the "Declaration on the Sovereignty of Russia", and exactly a year later, the first elections were held in Russia. Then Russia received its first President in the person of Boris Yeltsin.

In 1994, Boris Yeltsin tried to create a new symbol that would unite the citizens of a new country, even on the ruins of the old one. This is how the Day of the adoption of the declaration on state sovereignty of the Russian Federation appeared. Later, for simplicity, it was called Independence Day.

This initiative was quite "coolly" received by the people and for many years the holiday was perceived as an additional day off. In memory of the events associated with the collapse of the Soviet Union and as a negative assessment of the actions of the government there is a new catchy name of the holiday "Day of independence of the Russian Government of the Russian people"

In his speech in honor of this holiday in 1998 Boris Yeltsin tried to stop the rumors and give the holiday an additional meaning, suggesting that it be celebrated as "Russia Day".

However, the holiday officially received the new name only on February 1, 2002, when the provisions of the new Labor Law of the Russian Federation came into force.

Nowadays, the authorities of the country are making efforts to fill this holiday with patriotic meaning. On Russia Day, according to tradition, the president presents state prizes and awards in the Kremlin, and festive events are held on Red Square, which end in the evening with a large salute.

Festive events are organized all over Russia: concerts and other mass entertainment events are held at various concert venues and in parks. Buildings and streets are decorated with national flags.

Bonus
Live broadcast of the salute for the Day of Russia in 2021
As a rule, the salute is launched from 16 points, and the most important one is Red Square. In 2021, the fireworks will be launched from only one location-near the Kremlin. The brightest salute that will decorate the night sky can be seen in the live broadcast. The live broadcast starts at 22: 00 local time.

You can see the fireworks from Vorobyovy Gory and Poklonnaya Gora, as well as from the embankments and bridges of the Moskva River

From the very morning everything went topsy-turvy: it was raining heavily outside, the taxi driver got the address wrong and the shortest route to the airport was blocked.

Фразы–синонимы:
вкривь и вкось
задом наперед
наизнанку
наоборот
с точностью до наоборот
кувырком
через одно место
через жопу (rude!)

ШИВОРОТ-НАВЫВОРОТ

Literal definition: collar on the contrary

Meaning: about incorrectly (inside out) worn clothes or about unforeseen events, actions or judgments against everything and everyone. The word "шиворот" was used to describe a distinctive feature of boyar's clothing - a richly embroidered collar. There was a special punishment for those who fell under the wrath of the tsar: the disobedient was forced to ride through the whole city sitting on a horse backwards and wearing clothes inside out.

Usage example:
С самого утра все пошло шиворот-навыворот: на улице лил сильный дождь, таксист перепутал адрес, а кратчайший путь до аэропорта оказался перекрыт.
From the very morning everything went topsy-turvy: it was raining heavily outside, the taxi driver got the address wrong and the shortest route to the airport was blocked.

For sure Brian is not a cute and cuddly boy, but he is not capable of mean deeds.

Фразы–синонимы:
волк в овечьей шкуре

БЕЛЫЙ И ПУШИСТЫЙ

Literal definition: white and fluffy

Meaning: an ironical statement or a joke about someone's fake innocence. One of the newest idioms among those which we have already managed to get acquainted with. This phrase became popular in the XXI century thanks to the anecdote about the ugly toad engaged in self-promotion. It impertinently lies trying to make a false impression and assure the interlocutor that it is white and fluffy and only temporarily green and slippery.

Usage example:
Да, Брайан не белый и пушистый, но он не способен на подлые поступки.
For sure Brian is not a cute and cuddly boy, but he is not capable of mean deeds.

Synonyms:
волк в овечьей шкуре
